Let '010 roll!

Hey there!
I took some time off. Xmas holidays.
By the time every site post their annual awards I'm still amazed by the joy punk rock continues to bring me every day. Another year has passed, so what? I have no peculiar resolutions, I would not quit vegetarianism, still love my girlfriend like the first day, continue to buy records and ride my bike. I'll have some drinks and some rehearsals with friends... nothing extraordinary, fight daily routine with little things that makes happy.
Take care all. Happy fucking new year.
Go packers.

Echoes of Harper's ferry- Never forget

A record filled with with passion and honesty. I'm not getting tired of gruff punk acts, but sometimes bands can be outta line. I find in this record well crafted songs, simple-efficient chords and raw vocals line, great hooks that caught me quick in looping the 12 tracks effort. -Only the acoustic song kinds of bored me- EOHF are from Cleveland and on lock and collective (same as Captain we're sinking). If you want references i'll say smallbrownbike/bannerpilot/lawrence arms/punkrock.. Apart from trying each time to relate to other bands, I'll say that this record is just worth it, it fucking kicked my ass.

A little bit of folk punk. Kyle Williams has been playing acoustic tunes under the name imadethismistake since 2002. in 2007 he started playing with an electric band.

Hard girls- Hello

Hard girls are a three piece band from San Jose, Ca. Does it have something to do with their sound. Sometimes i do believe there's a link.
I find in this ep different influences, from the hot water music inspiration of Quinceanara, to the danceable Lazer parade to some classic indie punk rock mixed with enthusiastic singing parts flirting with folk punk stuff. And I like the cover.

Comadre- a wolf ticket

My dear friend Salt'n'peppa, aka Vince put this record on and I'm saying: "what's that?" (well I'm always asking when I've never heard of before-or forget-)So he says its the last Comadre record. I digged the thing and I now pick up the words from punknews because its exactly how i felt about it:
Comadre was fast, sporadic and angry. It all just seemed like a giant mess, but over time the mess began to make sense, with the intensity opening up to great hooks and melodies that range from fist-pounding to danceable. All of this and more is encapsulated in their most recent effort, A Wolf Ticket.
Ranging from Refused to Kid dynamite!I fucking love it, Jenny!

Cut the shit- Harmed and dangerous

Def 1. To tell someone to quit playing; to knock it off.
Cut the Shit was a punk/hardcore band based out of Boston, MA. It featured ex-members of Tear It Up, Cops and Robbers, and Bones Brigade. This Lp is 18 tracks in 10minutes of pissed off, raw hardcore/punk !80's thrash explosion! successfully mixing the mayhem of boston hardcore with the ferocity and anger of NYHC. 2003.

One of the best album of 2007. It's straightforward 80's hardcore withh raspy, ramblingly yelled vocals.

Some 11 months ago -Yeah I'll be celebrating soon the one year birthday of YGII- I was expecting a Lp for Iron Chic but well four more are better than nothing at all. 7 inches are a nice path for a band to avoid long awaited releases, as you know recording a full lenght takes way more time...

The Misfits- Bullet 7"

There are bands you've heard before, there are songs that did not make it. And then you dig a little more, years later and find the perfect match. "What a strike! attaboy!"
Just brilliant.
I've spent time studying the jfk assassination, counter alleys of the power, the lies, the hidden truth, the plot, the cold war era...so i created a connection, that i'm bound to this song, that bullet is my song...and then i listen to attitude and what a chorus. 1978 baby!

So it's been a while... I've been busy learning my new band bass parts. I now play bass in a band that i liked very much before being part of it. Lost boys. Punk hardcore, the 80's way. Here are some material you can find in different previous 7" or splits.
Check out the website for shows and more. I'm really excited as we are going to Ireland by the end of the month!

Teenage Bottlerocket- They came from the shadows

Following The Lillingtons what could have been better than TBR, Laramie based band lead by Templeman, former Lillingtons 6 stringer/singer?
This release comes on Fat, hum what can i say? I'm not spitting at fat mikes face. Its one of the label of my teenage years and it did a lot in the punk rock scene. I'm not listenning that much to new fat wreck bands, I know they are bands i dislike and bands i could like!
I will just say that some of my faves bands have been on fat, againts me! propagandhi...ya know. anyway i'm just bablling here,so just give a try to tbr. classic pop punk ala weasel/lillingtons.

Chuck Ragan- Gold country

I'm posting it trough this weekend I think...The latest thing I post of Chuck ragan was ole diesel and I received mails to erase it. I did so...
The man is playing in my town on friday. Only show in France...
So I'll go to him with my hwm tatoo on my leg and say:
-"Hey how are you doing? Your last cd is great, more county-ish but still awesome. Your warm voice, your easy listenning guitar chords, these melodies which stick to the bones."
And he'll say just that, with a tiny smile on his face.
-"I'm doing great"
So I'll look at him with all my gratitude.
-"Yeah, thats how i feel when listenning to gold country. I'm doing great. It's good to be alive."
And then realized I just closed my eyes and that is in front of us as I get carried away by his show... or maybe, as always, it'll be the time a fucking douche spills beer on me...

Second Rate- (almost) complete discography

All right fellows, I hope my english is not too boring for those who are indeed english spoken people and most of all I hope everything's fine for all of you as for me, this is sadly the end of my summer hollidays. Back to work....

Here is one great, almost legendary, french band. In the late 90's some bands were really leading the french scene like Burning Heads or Seven Hate and then came Second Rate, formed in 1998 in Besancon, eastern France. Picking up their influences in the american scene (Husker Du, Jawbreaker, Hot Water Music, Texas is the reason...) and mixing it with french 90's emo tradition such as Drive Blind, Sixpack, Les Thugs with a rock n roll side ala Real cool killers and a little Mega city four touch. So they basically become "huge" in the early 00's, being connected with bands like Flying Donuts, Sexypop, Homeboys, Dead Pop Club and forming the emoglam connection. The band reached a sort of climax by playing at the printemps de bourges fest -non underground- and touring uk the same year following theur split with the great band Scuttle.
A classic line up: two guitars, a drummer singer and a bass player who kept on changing over the year and a brilliant way to play great shows and release good cds. A five year span history which contribute a lot to the french scene. I remenber being to their last tour, saw them in Limoges and to this day it is still one of the best show I've ever seen. I videotaped it but after 6 years and many movings I cannot find it. Maye some day, I'll post it. It must be somewhere.
Anyway, hope you'll like this band for those who don't know these guys, you got to be familiar with the typical french accent when trying to sing in english!
You can visit Nasty samy website, former second rate guitar player, website to know some more.

Algernon Cadwallader- Some kind of Cadwallader

So I hear you sound like Cap'n'Jazz...
Pronounce that "al-jur-non kad-wall-uh-der", many says it's a steal of Tim Kinsella's voice, the 90's emo way above all, the skinned shouts, playing with the correctness of tune ala promise ring, in between melancholic or sometimes elusive or just catchy guitar chords. Soothing yet intricate melodies to the offbeat punk rhythms, you won't have a hard time to find a nice hook or an anthemic chorus (Motivational Song)
I'm proposing to you the effort they put out after their first demo. Hail, Hail Philly, this is some good shit. For french people like me, they'll be touring Europe this fall with two shows in France, and you can be sure i'll be at my town's show in Lyon, the 12th of october!

Cap'n'jazz- Analphabetapolothology

Cap'n'jazz in one very influential band, yet short lived, from the 90's. The Kinsella brothers formed the band in 1989, in Chicago and broke up in 1995 mainly because Davey von Bohlen (guitarist and vocalist) left Chicago to focus on his side projectThe promise ring. They got very significant over the years, the kinda band which is more popular after they're dead, and we often relate to them when speaking of the 90's emo. For that matters, beyond their talent and influence Cap'n'Jazz is also notable for the significant careers former members of the band have charted since the demise in 95: Make Believe, The Promise Ring, American Football, Owls, Ghosts and Vodka, Joan of Arc and Owen!!
Jade Tree decided in 1998 to pile up in a double cd release -an anthology- their recorded works from Shmap'n Shmazz, early singles, material from split releases, compilation tracks to unreleased demos...
Here it is.

The riot before- Split 7" w. Broadway calls/So long the lighthouse/Fists buried in pockets

Their last release and first full lenght is A BOMB! Huge guitars and passionate, slightly raspy vocals. Nice upbeats, Mike Ness meets Against me meets Gaslight Anthem americana with a folk punk accent. Catchy, anthemic, one of the best album of 2008. Memorable. The quartet from Richmond, Va deserves a "very very highly recommended" note! Impressive considering the work on that record and you'll be able to compare with previous stuff such as a split with The broadway calls and an ep name so long the lighthouse.

Lucero- New songs(live)/Nobody's darling/Tennessee

Rocknroll from below the Mason-Dixon line, at its finest. Lucero, from Memphis Tennessee seems loaded with whiskey and deep as the old south can be. Hurdling Mike Ness, Johnny Cash, working with Jim Dickinson for Nobodys Darling (Bob Dylan, The replacements, The Rolling Stones...) Lucero after a decade of clubs, bars and many miles of tar has just reached a new level, bringing their alt country-southern rock to a major company. Ben Nichols and co have made their choice, so before that here are some new songs (maybe in their upcoming record) for the fans and some old songs for those about to rock. One hell of a band.

I bought this record in Nyc, at generation records and i first tought it was an old comp. Boy I was wrong. I was used to the big headlines, big names. I only knew one name before listenning to it...that's maybe why i thought it was old, like the first steps of no idea records...
These are ten tracks with ten different bands from Ga, Fla.

Kimya Dawson&Matty pop chart- Split 7"

Anti folk, childish pop, indie stuff, ala plan itx...

One. You may have heard of Kimya Dawson in the ost of Juno, if not before.
Two. Whats important is her lyrics, with her music tending to serve as a mere platform for humorous stories whose serious subject matter contradicts the childlike catchiness underpinning them.
Three. Antsy pants is a side project of her.

One. Matty pop chart is a less polished John K. Samson, nasally and sweet.
Two. Matt tobey is his real name, he used to play in Abe Froman. Check all of this!
Three. There is no number three.
